Functional, practical or purely aesthetic, photography lies somewhere between science and art. There is also great pleasure in photography and we tend to delight in the technological availability of means to take pictures with.
The history of photography begins with the invention of camera obscura in the antiquity but so many steps have been made ever since. Before the development of digital cameras, photography depended exclusively on films. In comparison with digital technologies, the film, as recording medium is considered obsolete. A latent image is created on the film, and then it becomes usable when processed chemically in the studio.
There are more uses to photography than we could ever think of. Pictures are used for scientific evidence, in fact, together with recorded videos, they become the main proof in support or contradiction of a certain event. There are military, archaeological, forensic, data storage and geographical applications for photography, and these are the largest and most extensively used. Identity control and personal documents require photos. Besides the wide-range usage, photography that we cannot ignore here.
The average mobile phone user takes photos with the cellular. And we want to use photography to capture special moments and turn them into memories. There is no wedding or baptism without video recording and photo shooting. Or, consider for instance traveling, we will inevitably take at least one camera with us on our journey.
As for the artistic dimension of photography, there is hardly anything commercial about it. So many art galleries now house photography exhibitions in famous art galleries. They are invited to commemorate events, support shows or just give expression to a feeling, an opportunity, an occasion that would otherwise be lost for good. Artistic photos contradict everything that is practical or commercial: they have not direct functionality other than to delight and send a message to the viewer’s heart.
