The Art of Food Photography

Oscar Gustav Rejlander, a Swede painter, was born probably in 1883 to Carl Gustaf Rejlander, a Swedish Army Officer. Oscar studied art in Rome and initially settled in England. Abandoning his original line of work as an artist and portrait painter, he turned to photography. One of the assistants of Fox Talbot inspired him.

Commercial photography requires certain kinds of technical skills, such as finding the right subject and creating a presentation for a specific or general effect. The right camera is essential as well as photographic or digital enhancement tools, which is one of the benefits of the modern age – digital tools such as saturation, contrasting, and airbrushing can enhance or even change the state or composition of the photographed subject. However, nothing is a proper substitute for a good food photographer in commercial photography with a handle on his trade.

#2: It should be anonymous

Nude photography is not ‘about’ the person that is in the photo – in fact, the face of the model is often not even included in the frame. Contrast this with portrait photography, where the idea is to reveal or display something about the subject’s life or (more often) their personality. Nude photography is really the opposite of this, because it’s about the female form in general, not this person in particular. In nude photography, the person in the photo really serves only as an example of a category, with the category being ‘women’s bodies’.

#3: It should be non-sexual

While any heterosexual man would enjoy looking at nude photographs of women for reasons that not entirely dispassionate, there is still a difference between nude photography and erotic photography. While the difference might be a slight one, it’s all about intent. Nude photography fits that fine art definition of intending only to produce ’something interesting’. Erotic photography, on the other hand, is intended to titillate or arouse the viewer, and might not be all that interesting.

I was able to report back to my customers that this group of commercial photographers is prepared for any commercial photography challenge, whether it’s M&Ms or shrimp or forks rolled in a ball, chocolate dripping enticingly from a chocolate bar, glistening fruits and vegetables, a refreshing beverage, or a scoop of fresh ice cream. What a great day I had being immersed into this exciting new world of photography
